In what year did the 11th century start?

This is a common cause of arguments. Most say 'in the year 1000', but pedantic people say that it was 1001, 1000 being the last year of the 10th century. The same debate arose when it was time for the New Millennium: practically everyone celebrated the start of the year 2000, but there were a few people who stubbornly waited for 2001. Apparently the first century ran from 1-100, the second century beginning in 101. Make up your own mind!

How do you say this story begins in medieval times?

The year is...........( you put in the year) and this is in the time of the middle ages.

Which century are we in?

We are in the 21st century and will be through the year 2099.That depends. Those for whom it is 2008 are in the 21st centuryof the Common Era.Most people say that this started at January 1st 2000. Sticklers for correctness say that it started on January 1st 2001.Jewish people are in the year 5769 - so they are in their 58th century.Muslims are in 1429 AH, their 15th century.Other calendars are in different years. It is the 21st century. We are currently in the 21st century. It became the twenty first century in the year 2001. When the year 2101 comes it will then be the 22nd century. Every one hundred years marks a new century.we are in the 21st century & you are here too.the 21st century

Does a new millennium start in 2000 or 2001?

It's a matter of definition. You could argue it started in 2000 because, well, it's the first year with a '2' in front. But people say it started in 2001 because January 1st 2001 marked 2000 years since the start of the calendar. This is because the first year after Jesus was supposedly born was 1AD rather than 0: there was no year 0, it went straight from 1BC to 1AD. It's worth mentioning though that the whole thing is a bit silly considering how many times the calendar has been tweaked in the past two millenia and the fact that most historians who think Jesus was born at all say it happened around 4BC.

On which day did the 20th century end on?

Although some will mistakenly say the 31st of December 1999, believing that there was a year zero, Sunday the 31st of December 2000 was actually the last day of the 20th century.
