how usually means "wie" in German. An example would be:

English: " How are you?"

German: "Wie geht es dir?"

how can also mean "inwiefern" as in "could you explain how this situation will affect us?" or "wodurch" as in "how does A differ from B?"

How also has a number of different meanings in German if it is used in combination with an adverb. E.g. "how many" means "wieviel" or "wie viele", "depending on how ..." means "je nachdem, wie ..."
