If you were to use the word "Cheerleading" in a French context, it would definitely be a masculine noun, as all -ing loan words are (e.g. le parking, le planning, le meeting, etc.). As you may know, because the idea of cheerleading does not exist in Europe, there really isn't a proper translation.

Cheerleading was not common in France until 2006. We knew it only through American movies and there is no French word to describe that activity.

The activity itself could be described by "encourager, applaudir" but the word "encourageurs / encourageuses" does not exist. The closest word would be "supporter / supporteur" (in both writings, the latter a recent invention), but this is used mostly for football (soccer for the Americans) fans.

French websites use the American words (cheerleading / cheerleader) when speaking of the topic.

Actually it is called Cheerleading and France has its own Cheerleading Association. Sports are Government regulated to aide proper training without commercial interest. The French Sports Minister delegated this responsibility to The FFFA in 2007. The FFFA respects the USASF (United States All Star Federation) and following the same rules levels 1 - 4 but the government has a much stricter training program involving basic anatomy, physical fitness training education, first aid and safety standards. National health insurance requires this. The goal is one day to have a national diploma for positions in schools and one day see this sport accepted in the Olympics.

PomPom Girl (I know it doesn't sound very French but this is from two French colleagues so sounds plausible enough to me)
