友達に言っているを聞いた (tomodachi ni itteiru wo kiita) would mean "I heard her saying to her friends". An important thing to note, this sentence entirely relies upon "her" and "I" being clearly defined object and subject respectively. Without this, the sentence reads "heard saying to a friend/s" and clearly respective positions are lost and it doesn't make much sense.
