"Student" in Arabic is:

taleb (male) /tɑ:ləb/ طالب

taleba (female) /tɑ:ləbə/ طالبة

The root word is "talab" which means one who seeks, in this case, seeks knowledge.

The extremists in Afghanistan/Pakistan were seminary students and call themselves "Taliban", although in Arabic the word is "Tullab" for students (plural).
