die, der, and das. "Die" is the feminine form, "der" is the masculine form, and "das" is gender neutral. It depends on the noun to which it refers. For instance, "The man," would be "Der Mann." "The dog" would be "das Hund," unless the speaker knows the gender of the dog or it is important to the conversation. Oddly, "the door," would be "Die Tür," as doors are for some reason a feminine noun. Just so you know, the "ü" is called an umlaut "u". There are several special characters in the German alphabet; umlauts represent different sounds.
