There are two sets of splines on the torque converter, the ones you see on the outside and a seprate one inside, the first set is easy, but getting the shaft you already lined up in the first set to meet the second one is trickier. Try moving the engine up and down and side to side while rotating the crankshaft while making sure the engine and trans are on the same angle, once you have the inner set of splines lined up with the step down on the trans shaft the two should " clunk" together.
