Henry Wetherburn operated the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg Virginia from 1731 until 1742 when he opened is own tavern accross the street. He continued there until his death in 1760. One of his special drinks was Arrack Punch. This is made by combining arrack, (a liqueur distilled from coconut palm sap), with sugar and fruit juice. In March of 1749 the price of a quart of arrack in punch was 10 shillings while a quart of French wine was 4 shillings. It would appear this question arose because the asker had heard that Peter Jefferson, father of Thomas Jefferson, had purchased 200 acres of land in Goochland County Virginia from his cousin, William Randolph and the deal was sealed with "Henry Wetherburn's biggest bowl of arrack punch". The recording of the deed transfer does include that very wording. the record is dated May 18th 1736 which means it would have been while Henry was operating the Raleigh Tavern.
