Once you start motor, warm it up, then fine tune the distributor to timimg mark for your engine/year. Marks are located on a "tab" which sticks out of the timing chain housing. To time, rotae the dist very slightly until the mark on the harmonic balance (big round piece of metal with pully on it coming out of cover) lines up with the appropriate mark on the tab. You'll need a timing light to see this. Note: If you replace the points, make sure they are adjusted correctly first or it will not start. If the distributor has been taken out, or "disturbed", the easiest way is to take outnumber one spark plug (V-8 is first one on left side), turn motor until piston is at top of compression stroke (put a staw in the hole, when it pops out, that's the comp stroke - adjust until it's at the very top, ie, a little more and it starts to go down). Put distributor in engine with rotor pointing as near as possible to number one contact on dist cap. [you'll have to see which one that is by following the wire. You can mark a spot on the motor as you put the dis in and out until it lines up -- the dist will rotate about 1/4 turn as you insert it.
How do you set the timing on a 2300 mustang
To set the distributor in a 1965 Ford Mustang, first ensure the engine is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke for the number one cylinder. Next, align the rotor to point toward the number one spark plug wire on the distributor cap. Secure the distributor in place, then adjust the timing with a timing light to the specified degrees before top dead center (BTDC), typically around 6-10 degrees for this model. Finally, tighten the distributor hold-down clamp and recheck the timing if necessary.
loosen one bolt retaining the distributor, aim your timing gun at the flywheel and rotate the distributor until the line on the flywheel lines up with the correct mark on the engine block.
Yes
To set the point gap on a 1965 Mustang, first remove the distributor cap and rotor to access the points. Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap, which should be set between 0.016 and 0.020 inches. Adjust the gap by loosening the screw on the points and moving them until the correct gap is achieved, then tighten the screw. Finally, reassemble the distributor components and check the timing if necessary.

1 - 3 - 4 - 2 The distributor rotor turns CLOCKWISE
Actually , it doesn't have a distributor cap , it has Coil On Plug ( C.O.P ) ignition system
You have to be more specific. What is the engine size?
The distributor rotor turns COUNTERCLOCKWISE
