What are contour intervals and contour lines?
Acontour line (also level set, isopleth, isoline, isogram or isarithm) of a function of two variables is a curve along which the function has a constant value. In cartography, a contour line (often just called a "contour") joins points of equal elevation (height) above a given level, such as mean sea level. A contour map is a map illustrated with contour lines, for example a topographic map, which thus shows valleys and hills, and the steepness of slopes. The contour interval of a contour map is the difference in elevation between successive contour lines. A contour interval is basically the same thing.

An interpretation of the contour lines gives us an idea of the gradient of the data being presented. The contour lines on the weather map represent points of equal pressure. The contour lines of the lines of magnetic force on the surface of the Earth give some insight to the interior of the Earth. Contour lines were first used (as far as I know) in the Schiehallon Experiment, which was an attempt to measure the mass of the Earth. For the measurement of the volume of the small mountain, the concept of slicing the mountain into a set of equal-height countours.
