There's no way to set timing. Just align marks on camshaft and crankshaft during belt installation. There may be another problem if your car is still running rough.

You own a 1997 ford escort 1.4 and i think the timing belt slipped and the car became very rough and then finally came off at half an hour later at 70mph what are the likeley chances of engine damage?

I know of no 1997 Ford Escort equipped with a 1.4 L engine sold in the U.S. The 1997 Ford Escort with a timing chain is the 2.0 L engine. All 1997 Ford Escorts 2.0 L sold in the U.S. are non-interferance engines. No engine damage occurs when the belt breaks. If you have a 1.4 L Ford Escort, I suggest you cantact your local Ford dealer.
