There's not much you really have to do. They're plug and play. If you have the 85 Mbps or the 14 Mbps adapters, it's a good idea to run the software to setup a password on each. On my netgear kit, the software that comes with it has a security tab. When I go to that tab, I have to set the remote device first, and then set the the same password on the local device as I did on the remote device. If you set the local device first, you lose communication between powerline devices. The computer can always talk to the local device, but the local device cannot always talk to the remote device when the passwords are different. If you do mess up, just swap them and then you can set the password on the other device.
If you are using the 200 Mbps like I am, there are push button security buttons. Hold it in for 2 seconds. Now within 2 minutes you have to press and hold the second adapter's security button in for 2 seconds.
The software that comes with it is now a driver. You just plug them in and go. It's just a good idea to setup security which you will never have to do again once you do it the first time.
Other than that, you only need the setup software if you have 3 or more powerline adapters and want to setup quality of service.

If you want wireless, the Xbox 360 wireless adapter is the only way you can go wireless unless you buy a wireless bridge which is not easy at all to setup. You can still use your ethernet jack to connect to the Internet if your Xbox is in a different room from your router. To set up a connection to xbox live all you need is an ethernet cable. First plug one end of the cable into the back of the xbox in the ethernet port and the other end of the cable into your router or ethernet switch. Turn the xbox on and go the xbox live set up on the dashboard. Or if you have wifi in your house and can't use an ethernet cable you can buy a wireless network adapter and plug it into the back of the xbox following the directions on the package and then set up live on the dashboard.

There is none. You can buy a range extender. Those can usually be turned into a bridge. You would then connect this to the ethernet jack on the Xbox. I have used both wifi and ethernet on my Xbox 360 and haven't noticed much difference in either set up. However, I did have problems with my router once and that of course messed up my abilty to get on Xbox live. That was the only time I wished I had an ethernet set up.
