First you set the engine to top dead center by rotating the crankshaft pulley so the white marker dot is lined up with the timing mark on the engine. Now look for the camshaft pulley where it has the word "up" written on it. The word "up" should be in the straight up position when checking the number 1 piston's valve clearances. Then rotate the crankshaft 180 degrees and the camshaft will turn 90 degrees. The "up" will be facing the 9 o'clock piston and you can then check the number 3 piston's valve clearances. Rotate the crankshaft another 180 degrees and the camshaft will turn 90 degrees again. You can now check the number 4 piston's valve clearances. Rotate the crankshaft one more time 180 degrees and the camshaft will turn 90 degrees again. You can now make the final adjustments on the number 2 piston's valve clearances. The piston sequence runs 1-2-3-4 from the driver side (where the belts are) toward the passenger side.

I've done several overhauls over the years, but found it really tough setting valve clearances on my Toyota v6.The engine has no rocker arms. The lifters are right on top of the valve and there are shims on top of the lifters to set clearances. You have to put in small shims, measure clearance In millimeters, (since that is how Toyota sizes the shims) mike the shims that are in there now (unless they are new and have no wear, in which case the stamped number will be right) and then get the correct thickness shim to correct the clearance. Problem is it can be hard to get a good read on the old shim since the surface may be worn uneven. Also a little bit of oil between the shim and lifter can throw off your reading. You will probably order the shims, put them in and find a couple still aren't right! There are 21 different thicknesses (2.40 - 3.40 in .05 increments) and they cost around $15 each.
