Chick sexing is the procedure of determining the gender of chicks and other hatchlings.Chicks' appearance can be very similar, whether male or female, after hatching. Farmers and other chicken growers frequently need to know the gender of the chicks because of different feed schedules and production needs of the chickens. There are 3 methods for sexing chicks. Two methods, feather sexing and vent sexing, are done by a trained chicken sexer, and rely on observations of physical characteristics of the chicks. The third method, and most reliable, is raising sex-linkedchickens. They are cross-bredand produce chicks whose color is different at hatching. Choosing out the male chicks is then an easy process. There are two common varieties, the black sex link and the red sex link. The black sex link female is a completely black chick, the male black sex link chick is black with a white spot on the top of his head. The red sex link female is a buff or red chick, the male red sex link chick is white. If ordering chicks, choosing a sex link trait is the most reliable method to choose your chicken's gender.
It depends what your looking for and what is available in your location. If your looking for an affectionate breed that is good with children and makes a great pet i would suggest either a handtamed Silkie Bantam, Wyandotte Bantam, Modern Game Bantam, Old English Game Bantam or Japanese Bantam. If your looking for a chicken breed to set as broody hens (to sit on eggs and get chicks) Silkie Bantams, Wyandottes and even Rhode Island Reds may be suitable (Defiantely the Silkie's though). If you are looking for a chicken to lay eggs i'd recommend the average layer hens (also known as ISA Reds/ISA Browns who are bred not to go broody so you will never get chicks and will have a continous supply of eggs), Australorps and maybe even Orpingtons.
Our silkie bantam started crowing at 16 wks.
Sex-link is the name for the group of cross-breeds that can be sexed instantly after hatching. The females and males differ in colour. Black Stars are just one breed in this group.
Most Silkie hens and roosters are identical and sometimes the rooster Silkie doesn't crow through out his whole life. The only way you can tell them apart if the Silkie is mating with hens and has a spur then of course it is a rooster. And if a Silkie laid eggs or is sitting on eggs then she is a hen. Another way to tell them apart is if you have a hybrid Silkie that Silkie might get a big wattle and comb.
