To be honest I wouldn't suggest doing any tattoos with a homemade tattoo machine. You can pick up a good cheap professional kit off the net, Google it. And as for shading the piece, you may wish to go to your local tattoo shop and ask a few questions and/or watch them. But do not use a homemade machine you will never really get the look your striving to achieve.

Rotary machines are in my opinion, the only machines to use for portraits since they run smoother than a coil and are far less hard on the skin. There is no special method of shading for a rotary, just shade as you would with a coil machine. You will simply find that you can build up the ink more easily with one of them, and since they are softer on the skin, the tattoo in its entirety are far better for the client as well as for yourself due to the weight of the machine being more than half that of a coil.

What ink do you use for a homemade tattoo machine?

Well first off I would never recommend using a homemade tattoo machine. That is so ghetto and unsafe. If you are interested in Tattooing I would recommend a professional Tattoo set. If you are wanting to buy a set I have many extras so just email me and I can give you a price and advice. As far as the ink goes I would recommend moms, eternal, or precision Tattoo ink from Tuscon, AZ. They do sell ink from there website. The main tattoo artist is Dennis dwyer

How do you decide the speed of the tattoo machine?

Each artist finds and performs different settings for their personal machine, allowing the artist to feel comfortable using the machine. The type of skin the client has, along with the size or type of tattoo, determines the setting of the machine and the power supply. Plug in the power supply and attach the cord to the tattoo machine. Place the tube in the tattoo machine and insert the needle in the tube. Tap the foot pedal to ensure the machine is working. Adjust the springs on the tattoo machine to control the depth. Apply pressure with the hand that holds the machine, pressing down into the skin for more depth after adjusting the springs. Turn the voltage of the power supply up to adjust the speed. The more voltage, or higher setting, of the power supply equals a quicker speed. A lower speed is optimal for tattooing bony areas of the body and high speeds for fleshy parts.

How do you shade tattoos?

This takes a good eye and experience for the tattoo artist. There are not many that can shade in a tattoo. It is an art and very difficult. Coloring in and shading are different. To shade you need to have a place where a light would shine then make shadows where they would be if it was a picture. Takes skill. __________________________________________________________________ I disagree that shading is hard. If you have any artistic tendencies and can visualise where things will be darker and lighter you can shade a tattoo. It's no different to where you would shade if you were drawing the picture on paper. From a technical point of view, you need to adjust your machine to a longer stroke so it doesn't hit as fast, wind the voltage down, and use a wash set up to get your shade variations. There are a few different hand motions you can use to achieve smooth shading, circling usually provides the nicest and smoothest shade. It takes practice to get used to the speed and size of circling needed to achieve the desired shading. Practice a lot on yourself before attempting to shade a tattoo on someone else.
