The root structures of trees can be strengthened by firmly grasping the trunk (close to the ground) and gently shaking the tree. This imitates the normal wind action that would naturally occur if your tree was outside.
Some pecan and /or walnut grove operators will use a machine to shake the nuts or fruits (whatever) from the tree when ripe or near-ripe.
