Out in the woods, a ceramic or stone sharpener is best used for the actual grinding, sometimes called honing. In dire circumstances, any stone (even concrete) harder than the steel itself will do. Be sure to knock off the burrs by leaning onto the backside of the blade while depressing it into a piece of wood. Stropping is not really necessary unless you intend make your blade 'shaving sharp'. It's the same with any knife, but harder steel takes more 'elbow grease'.
