Three different controls, working under your direction, direct the bike through it's various gears. The primary gears shifter is the lever at your left toe. All the way down is first gear, the next notch upwards (halfway between first and second gear) is neutral, then comes second gear and next comes third, fourth and so on upwards to whatever number of gears your particular bike may have (it differs).

1) As you sit on the bike you should start it with the gear lever (left toe) at the neutral selection. In neutral you can roll the bike around and the engine is not engaged. This where you begin. Some bikes will have a light in the instruments indicating you are in neutral (the key must be turned on in the ignition). Once you have the engine running (not part of the original question) you can get ready to shirt into first gear by squeezing the clutch lever towards the handle bars (all the way) and tapping the gear selector lever (also known as the shift lever...at your left foot) downwards. You should hear the transmission clunk or click into gear. You can now, by the judicious application of the throttle (right hand grip) and gently (slowly) releasing the clutch lever (left hand) make the bike move forward. The actual coordination to do this takes practice and few get it exactly right the first time unless they have ridden other bikes before.

2) Once you are rolling along you will be able to sense when the engine is revving higher and higher and needs to be shifted into second. You should reduce the throttle and pull the clutch lever in at the same time and then lift the gear shift lever one click with your left toe. At this time the clutch lever can be released...gently. Shifting to further gears is essentially the same as when you shifted from first to second excepting that you will typically be doing so at greater road speed. To slow down the process is reversed. All this assumes a bike in proper operating order.

3) These are only the rudiments and are the first babysteps in learning to ride. I cannot recommend strongly enough that you begin learning in a safe location (like an empty parking lot...and make it a large one...and keep your speed within reason) and by all means NEVER forget where and how to use the brakes! Again, using the brakes was not a part of the original question! Getting "hands-on" lessons is far and away preferable to trying to learn how to ride by reading about it!!

Good Luck! Al
