One of the most common websites that offer these scripts is freehostedscripts.net and they offer scripts for other things like counting and showing the total number of visitors a blog has had.
As for the script itself, tumblr users usually put them in their blog description, although they do have the option to put them directly into the code of the blog's theme if they know how.
