It could happen when you log back to your desktop after remotely logging into your desktop and logging off. What happened to me was I logged into my office desktop from home and logged off. You may want to try this. Right click your mouse anywhere on your desktop. Select "Arrange Icons by" and then make sure that the option to "Show Desktop Icons" is checked. If not check it and they should come back. I don't know WHY Microsoft put this option in their OS but it's there and can cause some problems.
