The best way to close any program, including Windows Movie Maker is by clicking on File and Exit. However, the X on the top right of the program window will also close it.
This doesn't happen to me and never has. So you might have some sort of virus on your computer. Or you might need an update.
You have to put the windows in safe mood in order to shut down Win ME.
I can't tell you why you're not able to use the YouTube plug-in without more information. Are you totally unable to access it? Are you getting an error message of some sort?Try closing Windows Live Movie Maker, then open it again. If it doesn't help, shut down and reboot your system. If that still doesn't work, I would re-install the program again. I've posted the URL to Windows Live Movie Maker Download site for you below:http://download.live.com/moviemaker

((If you could provide a bit more detail; such as the message you are getting, if any, prior to Windows Movie Maker shutting down as you are adding clips, we may be able to help you fix the problem. There are numerous reasons why your WMM program is shutting down (regardless of the task your are attempting to perform). So more detail is required. In the meantime, try updating the program (via Automatic Updates); do a defrag and Disk Cleanup on your computer. )) I faces the same probleme: at the 7th clip (added or splitting or adding titles) the program shut down; no warning, no nothing. ...and yes, I did the last update 20min ago. If u have any suggestion... it realy helped me; few monthes ago (2, precisely) it didn`t have this probleme.

...if you shut off your computer.... you shut off windows along with it. Explain to me how you would shut down vista after your computer is off. That's a question worth asking on this site. The answer is almost as interesting as the question. The simple answer is 'NO', shut down Windows (whichever version) first, when it has shut down properly and it is safe to do so it will normally turn the computer off for you. Just turning your computer off with the switch can cause your hard drive to loose data - which you probably do not want. However if Windows has hung and will not respond to any typing, clicking etc you may have no choice but to do this anyway and just hope nothing goes badly wrong.
