Since meditation is an inward journey the answer is simply to sit comfortably in a place where your attention is not demanded to be outward. Sitting is better than lying down, since meditation has an aim of inner wakefulness. You may wish not to be disturbed and so sitting is a quiet place and turning off the telephone can be preferable, but there is no place without sound. Even quite noisy places can be just fine for meditation but since it is about feeling comfortable there is an element of subjectivity about it.
There is no need for initiation when one meditates. Meditation is simply relaxing into Self. Relaxing into the purest part of you.
Even though Sikhism promotes equality, male and females sit separately in the Gurdwara as most people feel comfortable sitting with their own gender. Also, during Gurbani lust (one of the five 'evils') is kept out of the way of prayers, meditation and hymns.
Kneeling-meditation. Sit with your feet under your buttocks, with back straight. This is called kneeling-meditation or Zazen pose. Much discipline is needed to maintain this pose. The resulting pins and needles causes the mind to concentrate on the meditation, not the pain...
Prayer is nothing more than a form of meditation. You sit in silence, or guided prayer, clear your mind, concentrate on your god, and hope to get divine answers. Prayer, same as meditation, is a spiritual cleansing.
They sit in the penalty box.
The kids usually sit with their classmates during school hours. At home, they may sit with family members during meals or activities.
Your First Meditation To begin meditating, find a place where you can sit comfortably and quietly. Then close your eyes and do nothing for a minute or so. Thoughts may come during that time, and that is okay. Then start the audio below and play your mantra** at a whisper. Each time you hear your mantra, say it quietly inside without moving your tongue or lips. After one minute the audio will fade to silence. Then continue saying your mantra quietly inside for four more minutes. If thoughts come during that time, gently return to saying your mantra quietly inside. The audio will tell you when four minutes is over. Follow this instruction for your first meditation only. After your first meditation, follow the instructions in the Daily Practice of Meditation section below.
Meditation is a good way. What I've found to help is drink some water, take a deep breath sit down and just sink deep in thought, much like meditation. I've found this advice to help others.
One of the simplest methods is to do a breath-watching meditation. You just sit quietly and become aware of your breath coming and going from your nose. When your mind wanders you turn attention back to your breath. That's the essence of this most basic way to meditate.
My place of meditation is in a wooden hut that I built in my garden. It has a basic shrine and when I enter it I light incense, ring a singing bowl, and sit.
It depends on the garden. Often, you will find lush vegetation, statues of the Buddha (or others), marble walk ways, fountains, benches or chairs to sit on, etc.
I am in a meditative mood: rather than *do* things, I will simply sit and watch my thoughts and feelings.
