Check the two applications you want to work with. Look in their "Save As" options on the file menus. Find an option that appears on both. That format should be compatible with both applications. You can then save in that format and know the file can be opened in both applications. So for example, if you are in Open Office Writer, under the Save As menu you will find that it can save its documents in some of the Microsoft Word formats, like 97, 2000, XP and so on. When you are working with documents that you want to use in several applications, try to keep them as simple as possible. Adding sophisticated facilities into a document may make it less likely to be properly supported when you try to open it in another.
