Human Anatomy

The main parts of the body are the head, the trunk or torso, and the limbs or appendages, which are the arms and legs.

On the exterior of the head are three of the major sensory organs (pair of eyes, pair of ears, and the nose), and the connections through the nose and mouth to the throat (pharynx) to the trachea and bronchi of the respiratory system and the esophagus of the digestive system.

The interior of the head contains the brain (major organ of the nervous system), with its individual divisions the cerebrum, cerebellum, and the brainstem (the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata). The brain also connects through the thalamus and hypothalamus to the pituitary gland. The brainstem connects to the spinal cord, which is housed within the spinal column formed of circular multilayer bones called vertebrae, which terminate at the coccyx (tailbone) near the pelvis.

The neck connects the head to the center part of the torso, which contains the major organs: the heart and lungs. The lungs are contained within the ribcages, at the lower end of which is the diaphragm (breathing muscles). The lower part of the torso is the abdomen. The internal organs are held in by the thin walls of the peritoneum, and include the stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, spleen, and two kidneys. The digestive system runs from the esophagus to the stomach, through the duodenum to the jejunum of the small intestine, and through its ileum to the large intestine. Bypassing the appendix, the large intestine joins to the colon, rectum, and anus. The kidneys are connected by the ureter to the bladder, which empties out of the body through the urethra. In males, the penis contains the urethra, and also carries semen (containing sperm) from the testes (testicles) contained in the sac called the scrotum. In females, the reproductive system includes the ovaries, uterus, and vagina.

There are other glands such as the thyroid and parathyroid glands in the neck, and the adrenal glands at the tops of the kidneys.

The arms are connected to the sternum (breastbone) by the clavicle (collarbone) and the two scapula (shoulder bones). The upper arm has the humerus bone, the lower arm the paired bones called the radius and ulna. The humerus and ulna are joined at the elbow joint (olecranon and fossa). The radius and ulna reach the bones of the wrist and hand (metacarpals and carpals), and the bones (phalanges) of the fingers and thumb.

The upper leg bones (femurs) are connected at the hip joints to the pelvis. They connect to the lower leg bones, the tibia and fibula, connected behind the kneecap or patella. At the connection to the foot are the metatarsals (ankle bones) and tarsals (foot bones), which support the phlanges of the toes and include the heel bone or calcaneus.

The major muscles of the skeletal system include the trapezium, latissimus dorsi, and abdominal transverse and oblique in the back. In the neck are the sternomastoids, and in the torso the pectoral (chest) muscles and the rectus abdominus (abs). In the arms are the deltoids (shoulder), biceps, triceps, and flexors and extensors of the lower arm. In the legs are the psoas (connect to the lower back), gluteus maximus (seat), quadriceps, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius (calf) and tibialis anterior.

The circulatory system is connected to the heart. It has the pulmonary arteries that connect the right ventricle to the lungs, and the pulmonary veins that return blood to the left atrium. The left ventricle pushes blood into the arteries through the large, flexible aorta. The arteries bring blood to the tissues through the capillaries, and it is returned through the veins.
