Staining a metal garage door is to be very carefully considered for a nuumber of reasons: 1) IF you're successful in finding a craftsperson who is offering to stain you metal door...the FIRST question to ask is: Please give me the name/phone of at least FIVE clients who'se door(s) you stained at LEAST five years ago. If those homeowners are STILL satisfied with their decision, VIOLA! You've found a qualified individual to do the work. 2) If your door(s) face either SOUTH or WEST...regardless of what the craftsperson has to say...think long 'n hard over staining the door(s). Why? Because the sun (and the subsequent UV) will brutalize the finish...mostly causing fading! Once the door has faded, it's, basically a goner! (Unless you call the craftsperson back and that will be, most likely a complete re-do!) 3) If there (ever) is any damage to the door(s) it'll be almost impossible to 'correct' the damaged area back to match the rest of the surface! Moreover, if such damage occurs and the craftsperson is no longer available..Whatchagonnado??? 4) A WOOD door can be truly stained and, if the proper product(s) are used, ie: RESIN based ONLY...NOT urethane or varnish...no matter what ANYONE tells you... Your (wood) door(s) will/can last a 100 years!! Yup! A hundred years. 'Course, you'll need to have Maintenance Coats applied on a regular basis...but such effort(s) are easy and relatively inexpensive! Resin (based) product NEVER hardens 100%...thus it simple degrades over a number of months (depending on the direction the door(s) face) and that fresh coat of resin will make the door(s) look like they were installed a couple of months ago!
