Take two piece of plastic lace (same or different colors).

Piece will be used in half so be sure there is sufficient length.

Hold two pieces together and thread lanyard piece on them, pulling to halfway point. (Fold lace so lace is now doubled with the hook at the fold end and four strand ends are at the other.)

Cross the two pieces at the hook (+). Take one (top) piece and loop it over to other side. Take other end (bottom) and loop it to other end. Now take side piece and thread over one and under the other. Take last piece and do the same from the other side. Pull four strands tight and you should have the first layer of the four square lace.

It is kind of a handful at the beginning but once that start is made it is just loop, loop, over-under, over-under until you are done. Some glue the ends. Some tie a knot and have ends hang for the bottom.
