First you have to find investors. Then you must be licensed by the state agency that regulates treatment centers, and have a business license issued by the county or city. For that, you usually need permanent premises, which would include housing, offices and rooms for group therapy. You will need staff: a clinical director, therapists and support staff (techs) and transportation for clients. Then you need a referral source to send people your way, unless you are the only game in town. You'll need office staff to handle paperwork, especially insurance billing. At that point, and after having dealt with myriad little details, you will be ready to open your doors.

Been there, done that. Have fun!

Oops! Forgot the medical director and someone to give the clients physicals when they arrive, adjust their medication, and so forth.

At some point you will also want to become accredited by an agency such as the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, but that would come after you have been open for a bit.

Do a Google search to find one near you and see if they offer a program you're comfortable with. Go in and take a tour to get yourself more comfortable and talk with the staff to see the next step. I went to Palm Beach Institute in South Florida, and couldn't be happier with the results. Good luck!

  • Find someone with a lot of money who is willing to invest.
  • Find some premises. Be sure there are kitchen and dining facilities for the number of clients you expect to handle.
  • Find a clinical director with the necessary credentials to obtain the necessary licenses.
  • Find a medical director, and arrange for an MD or ARNP to do medical evaluations and psychiatric eval if needed.
  • Arrange for a billing service and find someone to do insurance reviews and interact with the insurance companies.
  • Decide if you are going to accept juveniles, and make the necessary arrangements to keep them separate from the adults.
  • Hire therapists, mental health techs and maintenance personnel, cook, assistant cook, etc.
  • Develop a marketing strategy, and begin networking with other treatment centers, detox units, and organizations such as unions that might refer their members.
  • Hook up with some halfway houses, sober living facilities and so forth to have someplace to send your clients after they have finished your program.

There's plenty more to be done, but that's a good start.

What factors make an alcohol rehab facility successful?

An alcohol rehab facility is successful because of the inpatient treatment that is offered. While the patient is in the facility, there is no temptation of alcohol, and no pressure to take any.
