To start training a hamster to be "hand-tame", first lay out your palm and see if he/she will climb on willingly. If that doesnt work, try putting a few small pieces of his/her favorite food and trying again. If it still doesnt work, you can gently pick him or her up using your index finger and thumb(pick it up only very slightly under or above their front legs. Be sure to support his bottom, too, or he could easily slip out of your hand and onto the floor you might want to wear a glove as he might be skiddish and try to bite you.

What do you do when you first get a hamster and bring it home?

Before you get the hamster you need to get the cage prepared, then you can buy the hamster. The pet shop will give you a cardboard box to take it home in. Once your home, put the cardboard box in the cage then open it and let the hamster crawl into the cage and settle in before you start to handle it.

How do you care for a dwarf hamster that you just got?

You have to get the hamster used to it's home and surroundings. Try not to handle it much until it gets used to it's new home. After a day or so, start to get the hamster used to you. Remember to feed, water, and change their bedding.
