Generally for pain
When you take an opioid pain medication, whether it is codeine 3 or something stronger, for a long period of time, your body makes more opioid receptors in your brain, and you become tolerant to the medication. I'm assuming that you were prescribed this medication for a chronic pain condition. Go talk to your doctor and tell him/her that you think you have a tolerance to your medication. Tell them that the medicine no longer works, and and how much you take. Believe me, they will not tell you you are an addict - if you are a chronic pain patient, this is something that they will expect. Then you can work with your doctor to find a medication that will relieve the pain. After an extended time period of taking no narcotic pain medication, codeine will eventually work for you again, but it will probably be several months at the least.
