The Golden Gate, also called the Eastern Gate, was sealed by Muslims. Jewish religious beliefs stated that the Messiah would enter Jerusalem through that gate and the Muslims wanted to stop that from happening.
This is a wonderful question. The bridge and the inlet through the hills around San Francisco to San Francisco Bay are called The Golden Gate, and there is a great story behind this name. If you get to San Francisco, be sure to drive across the Bridge and turn left on Conzelman Road in the Marin County Headlands to the top of the hill, where you can gaze out at the Golden Gate. Good signage there tells the story. A well-educated young army surveyor named John Fremont came to this territory in the 1840s to map out the terrain and bestow names. He was struck by the beauty of the scene and reached back in his European literature studies for the name of one of the loveliest areas of Europe, the Straits of Bosporus. Literary folks called that The Golden Gate. He bestowed this name on this new California beauty spot. Ironically, this name was given just a few years before gold was discovered in California, in 1848. So the name Golden Gate resonated well as history proceeded. Seeing the Golden Gate Bridge and the lovely inlet into San Francisco Bay should be at the top of your San Francisco visit list. At the south end of the Bridge, walk along Crissy Field and stop at the Vista Point overlook. At the north end there is another Vista Point. Then drive up Conzelman Road to enjoy the full panorama of arguably one of the lovelier accessible places on the planet. Posted by Lee Foster, Answers San Francisco Expert.
The bridge crosses the Golden Gate Strait and that is where its name comes from--John Fremont named the strait. The builders were originally going to paint it gray or black, but the architect decided that the International Orange paint color blended better with the surroundings.

Metal comes in contact with oxygen. That's the main reason that many mechanics wipe down their older metal tools with oil (WD-40). The coat of oil prevents air from contacting the metal. That's why they spend much more than $100,000 to paint a bridge. The coat of paint saves them. H2O, water, has the same effect on metal.
