How do you stop your dog from jumping and scratching the door when you are not home especially when it rains or storms?

I'm sorry, but the vibe I get from the person who wrote this response is that they would apparently like their house to be ruined by repetitive scratching?
I have experienced my puppy scratching on the door as well, and even our sliding screen door.
One of the things I have read said to ignore the scratching. When you open a door for a dog that is jumping or scratching, you are teaching them that those behaviors open the door!
My dog hates the sound of coins being shaken around in an empty soda can. I have been teaching her that scratching or jumping on the door results in the obnoxious noise that she hates, and it has been working pretty well so far.

∙ 15y agoPerhaps start by leaving your dog alone for a short amount of time, then lengthening it gradually as time goes by. Sit by your dog when there are storms and comfort it, making it get used to storms. Most dogs are afraid of thunder and lightening, it is quite normal.

∙ 12y agoFor the door,a dog door,or you can just cut a hole in the door if that is easier.and for everything else you should scold him(just say: no!) whenever he scraches,it may take a few months but it will train him.i have to do it with my cat to stop biting.

(Jackbart96) One simple way is to stick a 2mm thick tranparent PVC film at the base of the door to upto about half-height of the door (or upto the door knob) These films are available in certain staionery shops as sticker sheets. (Maybe 3M manufactures them..?) A regular nail clipping reduces the chances of scratch marks on the door.
