Hi! there is actually a product called ear planes that helps eliminate the pressure felt in the ears during flying. (depending on where you are in the world you may not be able to get these, im actually in Australia) they are a really good product. Cold and flu tablets are really good for the pressure experienced in the ears during flying. Tablets containing pseudoephidrine hydrochloride are probably the best ones to go with.(60mg of it would be good) Chewing Gum is also another alternative if you havn't heard of it. Hopefully these remedies will help with your fear of flying and hopefully you will be able to fly on planes...hope this answered your question! =)

Each of us gets a certain amount of built-in ability to regulate anxiety. Whatever ability we get, is built-in during the first two years of life. When we don't build in an optimal amount of this ability, we compensate in one way or another to deal with anxiety.

Most common ways to make up for not enough built-in ability to regulate anxiety are to try to control situations we find ourselves in, and to avoid situations we can't control unless we have a way out. Flying - as a passenger - gives us no ability to control the plane or to get out of the plane during flight. The result is anxiety.

Learning more about how flying works helps, but that alone is not enough. That is just intellectual; the problem is more emotional. A part of the brain - the amygdala - triggers the release of stress hormones when we think "what if the wings fall off" or "what if there is a terrorist onboard"? The stress hormones cause the feelings.

If we could keep these thoughts out of mind we would not get either the stress hormones or the feelings. Some people are able to keep unwanted thoughts out of the mind, or can do so for a while. But when that system fails, it can't be reestablished. This leaves no answer other than to train the amygdala to accept these thoughts without triggering stress hormones.

Retraining the amygdala is tricky. The amygdala is primariy visual in its operation. And its primary interest is faces. Thus, if you can recall a moment with another person in which their face told you they cared about you and cared about your feelings, if this was shown on their face, you can use their face to retrain the amygdala. Recall that moment vividly and imagine that they are holding a photograph of an airplane taking off touching their face so you see both their face and the photo at the same time.

Then repeat this with other imaginary photos of flight, until you have covered every part of flight that troubles you. There are videos on YouTube that explains more about the amygdala and how it reacts to flying if you search my name (Tom Bunn) there.

How can you get over your fears of planes?

I was scared of planes to, not just flying in them, but from hearing them, or seeing them or anything like that, I don't quite know why, maybe from crashing or something, or maybe just because of how terrified of heights i am. But i guess to get over a fear, is to face it face to face. Good luck. :]
