Today we write out 1999 in Roman numerals as MCMXCIX, 1951 as MCMLI and to subtract these numerals from one another is quite difficult to say the least.

But the Romans themselves would have probably wrote out 1999 as IMM which is a simplification of MDCCCCLXXXXVIIII and 1951 as LMMI which is a simplification of MDCCCCLI.

So: IMM - LMMI = IIL which is a simplification of XXXXVIII

In fact the Latin word for 48 is 'duodequinquaginta' which literally means two from fifty.

Hindu-Arabic conversion:-

(-1+2000) - (-50+2001) = 48

Remember that in arithmetic a double minus is the equivalent of a plus.

How would you actually subtract 444 from 1999 in two different ways entirely in Roman numerals with step by step details?

before we show how to subtract in roman numerals, let's check the answer first. 1999 - 444 = 1555 1999 = MCMXCIX 444 = CDXLIV 1555 = MDLV if we separate them into each digit: 1999 = M/CM/XC/IX 444 = 0/CD/XL/IV (0 is just there as a placeholder so each has 4 "digits") 1555 = M/D/L/V And after this, we realize why people stopped using roman numerals and went with the superior hindu-arabic numerals. It just works.

How would you subtract 1776 from 1999 in Roman numerals giving reasons for your answer?

In today's terms 1999 and 1776 expressed in Roman numerals are MCMXCIX and MDCCLXXVI respectively. To find the difference of these numerals is almost impossible because of the way that 1999 is expressed despite the fact that 1776 is correct. But the Romans would have probably expressed these numbers in the following manner IMM and MDCCLXXVI. IMM is a simplification of MDCCCCLXXXXVIIII So: MDCCCCLXXXXVIIII - MDCCLXXVI = CCXXIII (223) by cancelling out the numerals. Check: MDCCLXXVI + CCXXIII = MDCCCCLXXXXVIIII = IMM when simplified The way we work out Roman numerals today is different in the way that the Romans actually did themselves because the rules governing the Roman numeral system were changed in the Middle Ages. Presumably to make it easier to convert Roman numerals into Hindu-Arabic numerals that were gradually being introduced into Western Europe.
