The book - the sequel to Luke's gospel and also written by Luke - begins with the Ascension of Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It then describes how the Church grew in numbers and how it was persecuted by the Jewish authorities, including Saul - a Pharisee - who was present at the murder of Stephen, a deacon in the Church and the first Christian Martyr.
