The Acts of he Apostles is as its name implies - what the disciples did after the resurrection and ascension.

The book - the sequel to Luke's gospel and also written by Luke - begins with the Ascension of Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. It then describes how the Church grew in numbers and how it was persecuted by the Jewish authorities, including Saul - a Pharisee - who was present at the murder of Stephen, a deacon in the Church and the first Christian Martyr.

Next, Saul's conversion on the Road to Damascus (on a mission to exterminate Chhristians there) becomes a turning point in the book.He has an encounter with the risen Christ and becomes a Christian as a result Now known by the Greek version of his name, Paul, the rest of the book describes how Paul and his companions (Barnabas, Silas, Luke himself, Timothy an others) embark on missionary journeys across the Roman Empire founding Churches many of which were subsequently written to by Paul, some of the letters having been preserved and included in the New Testament after the Book of Acts.

The book continues to relate the exploits of Paul and finishes just before Paul makes his final journey to Rome, where he was imprisoned an finally executed.
