Before you 'swim' your horse you need to find out if he likes water. Some horses love the water and I have even seen some try to climb inside their water troughs. Others, like one of mine, are afraid of mud puddles. So you have to find out where your horse stands on the subject of water.
The best bet is to take this slowly, gradually getting him used to the water. Always keep safety in mind. If your riding him into the water bareback is a good option. There are no stirrups to get caught up on anything and you don't want to ruin your good tack. Until you know how good a swimmer your horse will be, don't take him out so far that he can't readily reach bottom with his hooves. Just like people, if he can't feel ground under his feet he may panick.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind. While getting your horse used to the water and swimming, don't ride alone. There is safety in numbers. It may be a good idea to wear a life preserver. And if for some reason your horse just does not like the water, and has shown you over a period of time that he is not enjoying his swimming time, find something else you both find fun. Remember your horse is your most important riding partner and his opinion should count for something.
