Should all be manually done on a 88. So go out and set the wheel hubs to FREE. THen come into truck and shift to 2H on the transmission lever. One issue is that the pressure builds in the transmission and sometimes makes it difficult to shift. Sometimes backing up a bit helps. Other times waiting a while for the pressure to come down helps. Other times it changes with no problem at all.
