This can be extremely dangerous if you do not know what you're doing. If you are even the slightest bit unsure call an electrician to do it.

To measure amperage you will first have to turn the circuits off that feed the motor. Next you will have to open one of the connections for one of the phases and wire your amp meter in series with the motor meaning you will have to make the current pass through your amp meter and go into the motor once it is running.

Make sure that your meter is sized and fused appropriately or you risk injury and damage to your meter, maybe even death.

What are the advantages of three phase motor over the single phase motor?

A 3-phase motor produces a steady torque that does not pulsate. A 3-phase motor starts turning in the right direction when switched on without the need for a separate starting winding.

How should the resistance reading compare in each winding of a three phase motor?

The three windings are made the same to maintain a balance in the motor.

simply connecting voltmeter. If it shows any reading than it will the two terminal of same phase.

Can a 240 volt single phase motor be supplied with one phase until the other phase is closed without harming the motor?

Not a good idea. Use a double pole single throw switch to start and stop the motor if motor HP is small. Use a motor contactor on larger HP motors.

How do you mega a motor 3 phase?

The megger leads are connected in the following manner. Black lead to motor ground terminal or motor frame. The other lead to one of the phase wires. Meg that coil to ground and note the reading. Do the same with the other two motor leads and note the readings. Look at all of the three reading that you have taken. Engineers like the reading to be above 5 meg. Preferred readings about 2 meg. Motor needs looking after below 1 meg.

Is 3 phase motor run on 1 phase supply?

No. That would be a single phase motor.

Is there a way to rewire a 5hp 3phase motor to run off of 240v without buying additional equipment?

No, you only have phase a and b. The motor will run as smoothly as a 3 phase motor that has lost a leg of power. That is if the motor is designed for 208v in the first place. Not a good idea.
