This is known as a"pop up assembly"
You first remove the lever that connects to the the actuator. This is usually held with a spring clip. The actuator rod has a ball on the end, this is held on by a screwed cover which you remove next. ( this is about 1 inch diameter and is screwed directly to the downpipe). When this is pulled out, you can remove the plug. NOTE which way the lower socket on plug faces. This engages the actuator rod and some will not work if replaced backwards. - Now you can remove all the accumulated hair and gooey mess, then re-assemble opposite way.
