You will need:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Thin Blade
  • Pliers

Process:
  1. Take out the screw at the back. Using the thin blade pry the back cover off (there is a long catch at the bottom, and a small one just above where the cord comes out).
  2. Remove the screw holding the electronics box in and snap it out (there is a tab on one side of it). Be sure to save the red button.
  3. Remove the two screws holding the wire harness in place and disconnect the main power cord from the iron by squeezing the connector with the pliers. (This step can be skipped, but makes things easier to handle.)
  4. Slide the blade down between the buttons on top (there is a plastic piece between them, get the blade between one of the buttons and this plastic bit) and pry it out, there is a tab on this side and in the curve at the back. This will be the hardest part. When you get them out be careful to save the springs, plungers, and tiny ball bearings from beneath each button.
  5. Once the buttons are out, remove the screws below them. You should now be able to lift the white plastic handle enough to pull the piece with the fill cap off, there are tabs on the front bottom of it. With this removed you will see two more screws, remove them.
  6. Remove the screw in the back of the iron holding the white plastic to the grey plastic.
  7. Remove the two screws that were under the electronics box in the back. The base should now be free of the handle and reservoir. There are screws holding the electronics of the base on to the metal plate on the bottom. Be careful to save the rubber washers and the spring from between the base and reservoir. When reassembling the black plunger on the spring goes up into the reservoir, and the small end of the tall washer fits into the base.
  8. The white plastic should now be disconnected from the grey plastic and the blue reservoir. You can take the four screws (2 front and 2 back) out of the grey plastic to separate it from the reservoir. Take the washer off the bottom of the steam selector if you need to.

At this point the iron should be in many pieces, I hope you saved them all! I tried to make note of all the non-screw parts that could get lost if you aren't watching closely as you take the thing apart. I discovered this process through trial and error while trying to repair mine. I hope it helps. Reconstruction should be reverse of deconstruction. Make sure to get a good seal on those wires if you took them off (you may need to get new connectors from the hardware store).

I will not be held responsible if you break it, and I am pretty sure this will void any warranty!

Apart from being very much heavier than iron, lead is also very much softer than iron, so lead wouldn't last long if used as a hammer.
