They are not necessarily difficult, but they require a lot of dedication. First, they can live for about 15 years. Next, they require daily maintenance, special food and a custom cage. Also their cage should be constantly re-arranged/amended to prevent boredom. On the plus side, the cost to care for them is quite low compared to other exotic pets. For more in depth info talk to a pet store about them.
So, in general if you want a no hassle pet buy a goldfish.
First you should think about if you can handle the responsibility.. chinchillas have a long lifespan (anywhere from 10-20 years with proper care) and can be quite expensive! They also sleep most of the day and don't wake up til around 7pm. you should also put aside some money incase of an emergency, vet bills for exotics are not cheap!
If you can handle that then check out this website for how to take care of the chinchilla, from caging to nutrition... http://petchinchillas.info
i had a chinchilla in the past.. if you go somewhere like petco they have some supplies for chinchillas they must have lots of space and attention chinchillas dont really like noise they must take special baths: "dust bath" they can never get wet or it'll ruin there fur! they do need to be cleaned 30 m. a day in there dust bath there cage needs do be cleaned once a week change out water once a day and food they eat chinchilla hay, and small seeds if you have anymore q. ask p.s they can jump off the wall up to 10 feet in air! XD
Chinchillas are brilliant pets. I have had my current chinchilla for about 2 years, and she is great. Generally they are not too hard to take care of, I clean out my chinchilla once a week, and her cage has a tray so that I don't even need to take her out her cage to clean her out. Chinchillas need fed every few days, but love snacks like apples, licorice and apple tree branches. Beware Chinchillas run very very fast, they can also jump up to 5 feet high. They are brilliant pets to have, but remember chinchillas can live up to 25 years old, so it is a life commitment.
I have never owned a chinchilla but I do have three rabbits.two of which are babies. From what I have learned about rabbits they are very easy to take care of if you take care of them the right way.
gerbils r better. much easier and cheaper to take care of.
No, a chinchilla is a different rodent altogether that requires very different care.
That all depends on the 9 year old. If you think he is responsible and will take care of it then yes. Maybe try getting a test pet first like a fish or something and tell him if he can remember to take care of that for some time then he can have the chinchilla.
the gestation for a chinchilla is 111 days
Depending on care and captivity: 8-15 years
The mom can take care of all of the duties by herself. However some people will leave the dad with the two, the dad will sometimes help clean the newborn kit and dry it. However, many people remove the dad, as the female chinchilla has 2 uteruses and can get pregnant 24 hours and 7 days after birth, and breed backs can be harmful to a female.
The drive from Toowoomba to Chinchilla takes around two hours.
Take it to a vet.
