Caring for frogs can take a lot of effort for the caretaker. Frogs must be fed and checked on a regular basis. And tank cleanliness is a must to keep the frog healthy.

The type of care for your frog depends on its species. Certain breeds of frogs require special care. Some breeds eat live bugs, some eat dead bugs, others eat small rodents. Generally, small frogs eat bugs and large frogs eat rodents such as mice.

For bug-eating frogs, crickets can be the easiest because you can breed them yourself and are readily available in the wild just about everywhere year-round. Otherwise, flies or just about any other bug that can fit in the frog's mouth will do just fine.

The tank should provide ample room for the frog to move around freely with both land and water to live in. Adding branches and rocks give it areas to "hang out" while at least two inches of water at the bottom can give it enough room to swim. Change the layout of the tank once a month to keep it happy and clean the tank and everything in it and replace with fresh water weekly to keep the frog healthy. Never use soap to clean, always use warm water and scrub with a clean sponge.

Frogs are not foolproof, they will get sick and need veterinary care. Their food costs can mount up, especially if your frog is large, and the tank requires significant work. Owning a frog is not a 'soft' option and you must be prepared to care for it properly before you commit to owning any animal.

I'm not an expert but i have 2 Big Eyed Tree Frogs. We keep a 29 gallon tank with climbing branches, a water bowl and sphagnum moss for substrate (with pebbles beneath the sphagnum moss to let water drain away). We spray the inside of the tank 1 or 2 times daily. We feed 10 1/2inch crickets daily or every other day. Tank stays at about 73 degrees F but can be more or less without going below 65 or above 85.

It depends on what type of tree frog, but here is the general care info-

Tree frogs should be kept in no less than a 10 gallon tank, but if you just have one, a 5 gallon tank will be OK. The tank should be longer in height than length or width.

Tree frogs like crickets (most only eat live ones) but they can be substituted by fruits, vegetables and vegetation.

As tree frogs, they like to climb on things. You can use rocks piled up or vines and branches.

Most tree frogs enjoy burrowing, so make sure the substrate at least 2 inches deep.

The tank should be humid.

Put a heat pad on the side or bottom off to the side of the tank.

With that, you should be fine.

If you want to make a home for a pet green tree frog all you need is a big fish aquarium, some pebbles or gravel, water and a frog. First you fill up your fish container with water. Then put in all your pebbles. Swish around your pebbles in the water. If the water goes cloudy tip out all the water and repeat filling it up until it doesn't. . Now that the pebbles are all clean fill up your fish container to about 3 or 4 cm (depends what size your frog is). Push all of your pebbles to one side to make a bay. TOP TIP: Make sure you make a ramp for your frog to climb up. Find some plants and stick them in the pebbles and viola you have a frog home.

If you have a tree frog, the terrarium should be long and tall.

If you have a burrowing frog or running frog, you should have a wider cage.

For substrate use dirt or coconut fiber. It should be damp, not dry. Never use gravel for substrate because the frog could swallow one, choke, and die!

Put in long plants for tree frogs, or hanging branches.

Also, have a water dish. For other frogs that are not tree frogs, put in a water dish and some plants.

Have a misting bottle to mist your frogs daily so their skin stays moist. The temperature for MOST frogs should be about 70-80 degrees.

Feed your frog bugs such as crickets, meal worms, wax worms, blood worms, and fruit flies. You should dust the bug with a calcium or vitamin supplement so your frog is healthy. Smaller frogs should have fruit flies, blood worms, and tiny TEENY crickets, while bigger frogs should have meal worms, wax worms, and large crickets.

Never put two frogs of a different specimen or a frog and a toad together. Toads have a mucus that is toxic to frogs' sensitive skin, and two frogs of a different specimen will just fight.

Also, if one frog is small enough to fit into the other frog's mouth, the bigger frog will eat the smaller frog UNLESS they are male and female, which if they are, they will probably mate.

Red Eyed Tree frogs are fairly easy to take care of. First, you'll need the right housing. A 10-gallon terrarium is ideal. It should be kept warm (70-80 degrees) and humid (spray the sides with a spray bottle every day). It is recommended that you get a heater to put under the cage, and have humidity and temprature meters. You should also have a lamp overhead. Keep the lamp on during the day and off during the night. Purchase some fake plants for your frog to climb and rest in. It helps with boredom to have things to do such as climb. Make sure the cage/terrarium has proper ventilation and no gaps or openings where your frog can escape. You should line the cage with dirt, bark, paper towels or specific bedding and make it 3 inches deep or more. Do not use gravel or rocks because sometimes frogs miss the bugs and eat the bedding instead. Rocks are harmful to frog's digestion system. Make sure to set this all up BEFORE you actually get the frog. Let your frog settle in to it's new home before trying to clean the cage or handle the frog. They can become stressed out easily. Clean the cage frequently, as amnonia can build up and kill your pet. Not only that, but it can get stinky if you don't clean your pet's home often enough. DO NOT use soap while cleaning, because this will harm your frog. As for diet, most tree frogs eat crickets, mealworms (but don't feed them these too often) and other bugs. Beware, these insects aren't fully stocked with the vitamins frogs need, so they need to be dusted with mineral powder, or "gut-filled". This special powder can be found at most pet stores. You can, if you want, feed your frog live insects to simulate the wild and having it hunt for it's food. Make sure though, that these bugs don't escape from the cage. Feed your pet daily, and be sure to provide fresh water. Water is important to a frog's hydration and skin. Without water, your frog's skin will dry up or it will become dehydrated. Don't over feed or water your pet, however, because it can become too fat or too hydrated. Tree frogs should have dry land and wet land set up in their terrarium. Tree frogs, and most other frogs typically don't like to be held. They are more for observing than handling. Also, the oils from our skin can harm them. If you must handle your frog, wash your hands well and put on some clean rubber gloves. Tree frogs are one of the most expensive breeds. They usually range from $15 - 60. If you are a beginner with frogs, I suggest trying a less expensive frog first. $60 is a large amount of money for a frog, and you don't want it getting sick or dying days after you get it. Frogs live typically from 3-15 years. However, this can vary. To ensure the long life of your frog, if it shows signs of sickness, take it to a vet as soon as possible. Signs could be having trouble eating, drinking, dry skin, cloudy eyes and more. Some tree frogs are nocturnal, meaning they sleep during the day and are active during the night, so don't worry if all your frog does in the day is sit around and do nothing. However, be more cautious of this if you choose a frog that has a high activity level. If it's activity level slowly decreases, consult a vet. For more information, visit the related link. Thanks and enjoy your red eyed tree frog!
