Take two aspirin then drink a case of beer and recheck the rack and pinion and after drinking the beer. the old rack and pinion will look so much better you will decide not to replace it.
Gm had a recall on this. Take it to a dealer to do it for free.
Elevate the car on a jack. Remove the nuts in the inner and outer tie rods. Loosen all nuts in the bulkhead hole cover. Take the lower joint offÊthe old rack and pinion. Detach the fluid pipes and mounting bolts. Remove the rack and pinion. Install the new ran and pinion and replace the mounting brackets. Connect the power steering fluid pipes. Align the lower shaft.
it doesn't have one. It does however have a rack & pinion unit
To replace the rack and pinion on ChevyCelebritys: Under the hood raise the boot and disconnect the steering column shaft from the rack and pinion. Raise the vehicle to a suitable height and support on jack stands. Remove both front wheels. Loosen the lock nut on both tie rod ends. Remove the cotter pin and take the nut off of the tie rod. Use a suitable puller and take the tie rod end off of the steering arm. Counting the number of turns remove the tie rod end from the inner tie rod end of the rack and pinion. You will need to thread the old tie rod end onto the new rack and pinion the same number of turns that it came off of the old rack and pinion Loosen the bolts that hold the engine cradle to the rear of the frame and lower the engine cradle about 5 inches, but don't remove either bolt. In order to avoid possible damage, do not allow the engine components to contact the firewall. Use a suitable container to catch leaks and remove the hydraulic lines from the fittings on the old rack and pinion. Remove the bolts that hold the rack and pinion to the engine cradle. Raise the rack and pinion out of the mount and slide out of the car through the drivers side. Reverse the process to install the replacement rack and pinion. You will need to have the front end realigned. When you have finished installing the new rack and pinion, refill the power steering reservoir and top off with new fluid. With the engine running, turn the wheels back and forth (car still on the stands) several times to pump the fluid into the new rack and pinion. Top off the reservoir as required.
The 89 is an s5 and the 87 is an s4 It will fit but might take minor modification.
Yes you can but, there may be a core charge you will have to pay if he put a rebuilt one in.
The steering racks do not interchange, you can not take a 1989-1994 MK2/3 rack and pinion and install it into a 1995-up MK5(and probably MK4). The Pinion is too short, in the wrong place, and if you want it to fit, bust out the die grinder, the welder, and related modification tools.
Usually between $400 and $800. It depends on the shop you take it to, where they get their parts and what their labor rate is. Labor is about 2-3 hours and the rack itself can cost up to $400.
dextron at any auto parts store
I would suggest you take this project to a shop that does alignments also. This sometimes can be alot of work and then it has to be aligned after it is installed.
