How do you take off the gas tank on a 1985 Chevy Celebrity?

To remove the gas tank from a Chevy Celebrity:

1. Put chocks on the front tires to hold the car in place.

2 Drain the gasoline from the gas tank into a suitable container. Use gloves to protect your hands. Have a fire extinguisher near by in case of fire. I prefer to do this outdoors to prevent gas vapor buildup.

3. If the engine is fuel injected there will be a filter on the output fuel line, and the fuel will be under pressure. Wrap a rag around the line to catch leaking gas and loosen the fitting enough to release the pressure Use gloves to protect your hands, dispose of the rag properly.

4.When the pressure has dissipated disconnect both lines from the fuel lines coming out of the gas tank.

5, Disconnect the rubber filler hose and vent hose.

6. Disconnect the wiring harness from their connector at the fuel tank.

7. Unbolt the straps that hold the gas tank in place and lower the gas tank out of the car. This can be a two person job, particularly if you did not get all of the gas out of the tank. You could also use a floor jack to hold the tank up when removing the straps, as well as to lower the tank to the ground.
