I have a 1995 Grand Prix and this is how my shift knob came off. First turn your key to the on position (turn your key all the way forward without starting the car). Next shift your car into the lowest gear so that your shifter is all the way back and then you can access the clip. The clip is located underneath the shift button. Next, remove the clip (I used a screwdriver to basically pry out the clip). Now pull straight up on the shifter knob and it should pop right off. Mine took some force and I believe I had to wiggle mine a little. I hope this helps
pull the boot down then theres a little U shaped key near the bottom of the shift knob pull it out then slide shift knob off

I have a 94 Pontiac Grand AM SE and replacing the bulb on gear shift is difficult. The whole panel that the gear shift sits on can be remove. First pull the pin out from the shift knob its located in the front of the knob just above the metal rod it sits on. Then pull out the knob. After that just pry out the panel carefully at the sides, starting from the cigarette lighter up to where the switch is to adjust the mirror. Disconnect the wire from the cigarette lighter, gear shift and the switch that adjust the mirrors. The bulb is on a circuit that is one with the gear shift indicators.
Look at the base of the shift knob towards the dash and you will see a push in clip that you pull out and the knob will come off.

I have a 94 Firebird and on the bottom of the shifter knob there is a "U" shaped clip. You will have to shift into L1 to see it since it is on the front of the knob. Once you pull out the clip, it slides off and you can replace it with whatever kind you wnat but make sure the "push to shift" function is on the new knob.
Shift cable needs to be adjusted.
Yes, a universal shift knob will work in the Volkswagen Golf. The shift knob is added to the shift column by removing the top of the knob and using the included screw to attach the knob.
Try twisting it and then get a manual for it. Try Chiltons or Haynes.
