Usually a dog will figure it out with repetition. If you keep throwing a ball it may initially just pick it up off of the ground to bring it back but as it's fetching skills improve it will likely start to try and catch it out of the air. Of course it all depends on the dog breed and the dogs athletic abilities. The more you play fetch with a dog the better they will get at it. Some dog breeds have no instinct or desire to chase or catch anything. Huskies are a good example of this. Most of them will sit and look at you as if to say "you go get it; I'm not going to bother!". Their instinct is to run, not fetch. A Retriever will typically be very good at catching things and bringing them back to you; it is their instinct.

To play fetch with your dog you need a rubber ball. Then go to your expression menu and the "dog" section. Choose "fetch" and you will toss a ball that your dog fetches, extending the expression throws the ball further.
You can do a whole lot of things! Play fetch or frisbee, take them on walks, teach them some tricks, give them a bath or brush them, snuggle with them, tell them secrets, LOVE THEM!
Play this is a great time to teach your dog to fetch or play tug-of-war or tricks just make sure you use small treats for a reward.
