I would just say, "Oh, Josh (or whoever)? Yeah, there were some rumors about us. But to be honest, he's pretty much a jerk."

tell her how you feel, silly! and chances are if there was a rumor about you liking someone else, it may not have ruined your chances, but it sure didnt help. if she had feelings for you but thought you liked someone else, than she would be less likely to pursue you.
