If the child is over 12 then you may not have any recourse but to tell them for fear others may know about it and that child hears it from someone else. In this case be kind about it and don't use the word 'thief.' Just tell them that 'your mom has a problem right now and she takes things that don't belong to her and she is getting help for it and will be coming home.' It is important a child does not feel abandoned by their mother whether they are a thief or not.
