Take your stone to a local jeweler who can use a probe to determine whether or not it is a diamond. There is basically no authentication method for CZ, since there are so many types of faux diamonds.

What is cubic zirconia?

* A man-made substitute for diamonds. It is much closer to the physical characteristics of a real diamond than other imitations. * Cubic zirconia (also known simply as 'cz') is the finest available alternative to a diamond. This is because it has many of the properties of a diamond. It has the same shape and colour and, like a diamond, cannot be scratched by dirt or sand. Most people, even trained gemmologists, cannot tell the difference between a well-cut cubic zirconia stone and a diamond using only the naked eye. There are, however, differences between diamonds and cubic zirconia. Although in appearance cubic zirconia looks just like a good quality diamond, it is more dense than a diamond - weighing up to 60% more than a diamond of the same size. In addition, it is of note that cubic zirconia is a man made crystal. If, therefore, a piece of cubic zirconia is not perfect, it is discarded. Only the highest grade and most beautifully polished cubic zirconia stones are used throughout our silver jewellery collection. We believe that cubic zirconia is not merely a diamond substitute but a beautiful semi-precious gem in its own right. Given proper cleaning, cubic zirconia will retain its beauty and brilliance for years. Cubic zirconia jewellery can be cleaned easily using hot soapy water or warm water with a small amount of dishwashing detergent. It might help to first remove any dirt with an old toothbrush.

How do you tell if diamond jewelry is real?

There are a number of different ways to tell. The quickest and easier is the fog test: a real diamond will disperse the heat from your breath for immediately, the setting: such as 10k, 14k or 18k stamps inside the setting, anything with a C.Z (cubic zirconia) usually indicates that the diamond is not real, a jewelers loupe and also if it has rainbow reflections if you look at it from the top.

How do you tell a real diamond from a fake?

Well, if you're not a gem expert you will not be able to tell the cut and the clarity of the stone or even if its real. You can take it to a place that sells gemstones or even a pawn shop. They can tell you with a diamond tester if it is real or not: you can't tell if its real or not by looking at the metal band.Reputable jewelers will offer a certificate of authenticity. Quality diamonds sparkle like nothing else in the world. You can even go to someplace like Sears and have them show you the difference between a diamond and a cubic zirconium. An x-ray crystallograph can provide a reasonably high degree of assurance when it is used to identify smaller diamonds that were cut from a larger one. A cheap way to test a questionable gem is to drop it into clear mineral oil. A real diamond will remain visible because it has an optical density that is higher than (most) fakes and higher than the oil.The best way is to take it to a certified gemologist for an appraisal.A Few Simple Tests:Heft test (weight compared to size):A diamond with the same size of a "synthetic cubic zirconia" will be lighter in weight (carat).Hardness Test:Diamond can scratch "synthetic cubic zirconia" easily while "synthetic cubic zirconia" can't scratch diamond. This destructive test is not recommended but if required use apply on or below girdle area of stone.Read through effect:RBC (round brilliant cut) diamond when placed table down on written matter (generally a line or point is enough) and viewed from above the girdle (pavilion facets) will not exhibit read through effect whereas "synthetic cubic zirconia" will exhibit low read through effect.Inclusions:Some diamonds will have visible inclusions whereas synthetics, especially cubic zirconia will have white unmelted powder which sometime looks like gas bubbles.

A cubic zirconia WILL cut glass. The way to tell it apart from a REAL diamond is that only a real diamond will cut a cubic zirconia.

What synthetic minerals have been developed as a substitutes for diamonds?

Synthetic diamonds have been created as substitutes for natural diamonds in materials where hardness and cutting ability is strongly desired. Definitions are in order: SYNTHETIC - like Dolly the sheep, a synthetic is real and exactly the same as a natural gem with one exception. It was created in a lab and not naturally occuring and recovered from the earth. At this date, most jewelers even using all the best test cannot tell the difference between man made diamonds and natural diamonds without expensive and costly equipment. A simple pen sized diamond tester can instantly let you know a cubic zirconia is not real. Additionally Cubic zirconia of the same dimensions weigh much more than diamonds. Cubic zirconia can be scratched by a diamond but a diamond cannot be scratched by a cubic zirconia. If you met the woman who was the first test tube baby born in the 1970's, she is a "synthetic". A blow up doll is a "simulant". SIMULANT - a substitute that is a completely different substance not like the natural and not like the Synthetic. There was once a puppet on TV called Lamb Chop. It is meant to represent a sheep but it is not real. Cubic Zirconia is a man made gem that can fool many people but is not a diamond. To answer the questions all diamond synthetics are made of carbon, pure carbon just like a natural diamond. For simulants the materials they may be made from are varied from glass to moissanite to cubic zirconia.

How can I tell when a diamond is fake?

There are a couple of different ways to spot a fake diamond. Typically fakes are cubic zirconia and these stones are 1) heavier than a diamond that is the same size, 2) can't be cut as sharply as a diamond, and 3) can scratch much more easily.

How is a cubic zirconia ring made?

Cupic Zirconia rings are made much in the same way that diamond rings are made, which is why they can sometimes be convincing fakes. The gold, the settings, they are all the same, it is only the stone which is different, which, by the way, any girl will be able to tell!

How do you tell if diamonds are real?

Here are several at-home exercises you can perform on a stone to determine whether or not it is a diamond.NB: Your only infallible exercise is to take the diamond to a certified gemologist and pay for a document that confirms the diamond's cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.At-home ExercisesThe line or dot testThis simple visual test will tell you. Diamonds reflect light back out through the top surface (called the table) of the diamond. Cubic Zirconia, or CZ for short, is transparent and reflects the light differently.Draw a small dot or line on a clean piece of paper.Place the diamond / cubic zirconia in question face down on the dot.Look through the bottom. If it is a real diamond you should not be able to see the dot or line; the image should be distorted. If your stone is a cubic zirconia (CZ) the dot will become a circle that is clearly visible. The reason is that fake diamonds refract light differently than real diamonds. However some types of fake diamonds, such as those made with cubic zirconium oxide, synthetic rutile, fabulite and certain doublets can escape this detection method. The Hardness Test - diamond is the hardest mineral known. Cut a piece of glass with it, like an old bottle or window. If it easily gouges the glass, it's either a diamond or a cubic zirconia. If it doesn't, it's glass.Black Light Test- Diamonds have unique molecular properties. If you shine a black light (long-wave ultraviolet light ) on a stone and it will glow with different colors depending on what it is. A real diamond may gloe blue, cubic zirconia will glow mustard yellow, and glass will not glow at all.Otherwise, take your jewelry to a qualified jeweler or gemologist and ask them to test your diamonds for absolute verification.Only a jeweller can tell for sure if a diamond is fake or not, so do not throw out that stone, just because it seems to fail any of the three tests set out here.bring them to a diamond cutter they have special tools to determine if its real
