Well, if you're not a gem expert you will not be able to tell the cut and the clarity of the stone or even if its real. You can take it to a place that sells gemstones or even a pawn shop. They can tell you with a diamond tester if it is real or not: you can't tell if its real or not by looking at the metal band.
Reputable jewelers will offer a certificate of authenticity. Quality diamonds sparkle like nothing else in the world. You can even go to someplace like Sears and have them show you the difference between a diamond and a cubic zirconium.
An x-ray crystallograph can provide a reasonably high degree of assurance when it is used to identify smaller diamonds that were cut from a larger one. A cheap way to test a questionable gem is to drop it into clear mineral oil. A real diamond will remain visible because it has an optical density that is higher than (most) fakes and higher than the oil.
The best way is to take it to a certified gemologist for an appraisal.
A Few Simple Tests:
Heft test (weight compared to size):
A diamond with the same size of a "synthetic cubic zirconia" will be lighter in weight (carat).
Hardness Test:
Diamond can scratch "synthetic cubic zirconia" easily while "synthetic cubic zirconia" can't scratch diamond. This destructive test is not recommended but if required use apply on or below girdle area of stone.
Read through effect:
RBC (round brilliant cut) diamond when placed table down on written matter (generally a line or point is enough) and viewed from above the girdle (pavilion facets) will not exhibit read through effect whereas "synthetic cubic zirconia" will exhibit low read through effect.
Inclusions:
Some diamonds will have visible inclusions whereas synthetics, especially cubic zirconia will have white unmelted powder which sometime looks like gas bubbles.
