Ladybug is the common name for the family of beetles called Coccinellidae, with over 5,000 different species. With so many different types under one family, even etymologists have difficulty distinguishing between them. There are several main features used to find the exact species of ladybug.
Firstly, every species has a different number of spots on their shell. The most common misconception about the spots of a ladybug is that they refer to the age of the insect, but this is entirely untrue. The differing number of spots is an identification of the species, for example a ladybug with eight spots might be an eight spotted ladybug. However there are 52 kinds of ladybugs that have eights spots, so this alone is not enough to identify the exact species. The next thing to look at is the colour of the abdomen. Although the most well known ladybug is red with black spots, the most common ladybugs are either plain black or brown. There are also beige, yellow, orange, green, pink and blue coloured ladybugs. By looking at both the colour of the abdomen and the number of spots, a more precise identification can be made, however, there are still too many species to narrow it down to a single species. The next factor to take into account is the colour of the spots. Again the most recognised ladybugs have black spots, but they may also have beige, blue, green, brown, orange, red, white or yellow spots on their shells. When the spot colour, the abdomen colour and the number of spots is taken into account, again the field is narrowed, but an exact species cannot be identified. It is now that the pattern the spots make needs to be taken into account. Although the most common ladybugs have round, circular spots, but other species may have bands of colour, stripes on their front or back, or even one solid colour with no visible spots or stripes. Another way of narrowing down the species is to look at the size of ladybug. They can range from about 1mm to nearly 10mm and by measuring the exact size can help a clearer identification. Most species also have an eye spot. Though the majority do have these eye spots, and this makes is very hard to narrow it down to a specific species, there are only a few species that do not. If there are no eye spots present, it can only be one of few species. The last factor that can help identify a species more specifically is the month that they can be seen. Different species come out at different times of the year, so taking note of when they have been seen can help define an exact species. By using all these factors the species can be narrowed down to one or two, and it is then a simple matter of finding a picture to match it to. With over 5,000 species, it can be a hard process to find the exact species, but with a little practice and patience, identification will become easier. Follow the link below for an identification guide that will help you select the features, and show pictures of each of the possible species.
The age of the lady bug you can tell by its spots.
Fact: Ladybugs always have an even amount of spots!
The dots and size of the ladybug ditermines the age of the ladybug.
however many dots his/her back
you counthow many spots it has.
All ladybug species are different..... So, it's hard to say how old they are. The rumor that you can tell how old they are by the spots on one wing, or both wings, is a myth. Unless you raise ladybugs, (as if!) you may never know how old a ladybug is. Does that answer your question?
By Looking At Their Butts
well you just call it a lady bug
yes dotted ones are female
They loose there color
by there spots
you see if it has a wiener
if they are nice or harmful
U count the dots on them.
Most of the time the dots or spots on a ladybug prove how old the bug is.
